It consists of a silver layer containing cd or dvd and a black polyvinyl chloride layer able to hold 3 5 minutes of audio on 33 rpm which can be played on a regular phonograph. Vinyl records replaced an even earlier system of wax based cylinders which acted as both recording and playback units. Disc makers was a pioneer in the custom vinyl business way back in 1940s and was synonymous with the highest quality record pressing for independent artists and labels in the 70s 80s and 90s. Vinyl is an analog storage medium which means there is a physical record of the music imprinted on the vinyl disc read by a sensitive needle called a stylus. It had co existed with the phonograph cylinder from the late 1880s and had effectively superseded it by around 1912. Original sound is analog by definition. Even though vinyl is a physical medium the sound often starts as a digital or analog recording captured to a hard drive.

The phonograph disc record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. In the mid 2000s gradually records made of any material began to be called vinyl records or simply vinyl.

The days of vinyl records being a nostalgic relic of the past are long gone. The standard vinyl album is the 12 inch 33 rpm lp 7 inch 33 rpm ep and 7 inch 45 rpm single.
