Secure them with the pre driven nails into the subfloor keeping the strip out from the wall about 2 3 the thickness of the carpet. Cut the tackless strips to size with a strip cutter or heavy snips. If you have carpet already in place be prepared to remove it before moving on. Don t install tackless strips across thresholds or doorways. After the carpet is attached along the first wall trim the excess from the edge using a wall carpet trimmer. Keep the tool s shoe pressed tightly against the carpeting and keep the carpet tight against the baseboard as you guide it along the wall.

Set the wall trimmer to the thickness of the carpet. Install tack strip around the entire perimeter of the room making sure to maintain a 3 8 gulley between the tack strip and the baseboard. Don t install tackless strips across thresholds or doorways. Clean and prep the floor.

A good way to determine that is to place your fingers between the wall and the piece of tack strip. The tacks on the strips are sharp and could poke through the carpet and hurt your feet. Cut lengths of tackless strip to fit each wall around the perimeter of the room.
