When installing a chimney liner for a pellet stove there is one thing to remember. A liner going to an insert or stove in the fireplace will be measured from the top of the chimney to the top of the insert or stove or the center of the hole on the back of the stove. A thick tarry smoke rises from every fire you burn and without a liner it will stick to the walls of your chimney and create a fire hazard. The liner extends past the top of the chimney by at least a foot and is covered with a vent cap.

The vent cap must have a cover to prevent rain water from entering the vent and chimney liner. This is a metal pipe that attaches to the pellet stove at one end typically with a pellet stove pipe chimney adapter and extends all the way through the chimney and above the roof at a suitable clearance. The thimble is referred to as the hole on the side of the chimney in the living space that allows stove pipe to attach to the chimney. If the chimney length is greater than 15 feet you should just up to a 4 inch chimney liner.
