Installing Carpet Seams

Carpet installation is not a very common do it yourself project mostly because professional installation is quite affordable.

Wait for several hours before removing the weights or walking on the carpet. We would term an unacceptable seam those that are not flush with each other or cause a gap between the pieces of carpet. Install carpet pad so that any seams will be at right angles to those in the carpet. While invisible carpet seams are not always possible it is the goal of many great installers to construct invisible seams.

Install carpet strips so that they run toward the room s windows rather than perpendicular to them. Standard carpeting is typically. Use a staple hammer tacker to fasten the carpet pad against the edge of the tack strip. Berber carpet should be cut lengthwise along the bias never cut with a cross seam as it will be more noticeable.

Then roll out the carpet leaving 3 4 inches of excess on each side. Place seaming tape underneath seams heat the tape and seal the seams with a carpet roller. Place the new seam tape between the two pieces of carpet and heat the tape with your steaming iron. After the seams are sealed kick the carpet into place along one wall with a knee kicker stretch it across the room tightly and tack it on the other side.

Carpet that has begun to unravel and come loose is both potentially a safety hazard and an eyesore. While this is an admirable goal invisible seams should never be promised. But for those diyers who do try it the trickiest part of carpet installation is creating seams between butting pieces of carpet. Sunlight will flow over seams that run toward windows minimizing their visibility but will highlight or accentuate any valleys between carpet sections that run perpendicular to windows.

Press the carpet edges into the glue and weigh them down with weights or books. If you have carpeting installed and this is a problem in some cases it can be repaired. Tape neighboring pieces together with 2 to 3 inch masking tape or as directed by the manufacturer. For a seam tape fix pull back the two loose pieces of carpet and remove the old seam tape.
