As a licence master plumber i use plumbers putty all the time to seal drains in sinks and baths.

When disconnected lift the faucet fixture from the top of the sink. Apply a generous bead of plumber s putty to the underside of the flange on the sink drain ring. Unhook the lift rod for the drain stopper.

Use a putty knife if needed to assist prying the old faucet from the old sealant or gasket.
